Listening to audio files from the verse-of-the-day

This may look a bit daunting if you are not experienced at installing things but it's pretty easy if you just follow these instructions.

PRINT THIS PAGE FOR REFERENCE AS YOU INSTALL THE SOFTWARE

To listen to the Bible verse you must have RealPlayer installed. This is a common audio player and can be downloaded free here.

After you download the RealPlayer installer you should find a file named "RealPlayer10-5GOLD.exe" (or something similar; this can vary depending on which version you download but will be the same for most people). Double-click the file to start the installation.

  • On the first screen you'll get the license agreement. You can read it if you want but they all say about the same thing.
  • On the second screen you'll pick the type of your Internet connection. (This isn't absolutely vital information so the world won't end if you pick the wrong speed.)
  • On the next screen we recommend you uncheck the third option - the "Add a desktop shortcut for free games..."
  • Soon you'll see a "Universal Media Player" screen. You probably want to choose the second option, "Select media types..."
  • Next you'll see a long list of filetypes to assign to RealPlayer, each showing what program is now assigned to each. Unless you have a reason to make a change (and usually you won't) we recommend unchecking everything except those that show they are assigned to RealPlayer. smil files (that's the kind of file you're wanting to listen to here) is one of those automatically assigned to RealPlayer.
  • After clicking "Finish" RealPlayer will try to contact itself on the Internet (i.e., you should have your Internet connection up and operating). You'll be asked if you want local weather on your desktop. We suggest unchecking that option.
  • On the next screen choose Basic Setup - that's the free one.
  • The next screen is the registration screen. Go ahead and fill it out but uncheck all of the options at the bottom.

You're done! RealPlayer will start running and play an advertisement. You can close it down (click on the X-box like any window) and go back to the church website. When you click on the speaker icon to play the verse-of-the-day you'll see a box pop up asking what you want to open the file with and with RealPlayer already chosen. Check the "Do this automatically" box and then OK and you're in business.
